Firebase Academy
Bill McLennan
Qualification summary:
Bill McLennan is a retired police officer and is now a tactical firearms training consultant with
Firebase.
McLennan retired from the San Antonio (Texas) Police Department in 1996, with more than 30
years of service. Some of his police assignments are: patrol, K-9, investigations, evidence
collection and firearms-tactics instructor. At retirement he was range-master at the San Antonio
Police Academy and conducted training for more than 2000 officers with three city agencies.
His background in professional firearms training began as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps
Reserve 4th Recon Bn. Pistol Team (1963-68) – where he coached that team in addition to
participating in its three gun competition. His military coaching experience and training, led to a
position as an adjunct instructor with the San Antonio PD in 1971.
McLennan has also worked extensively outside of law enforcement training, teaching all
branches of the U.S. Military Peace Keepers in defensive shooting techniques, as well as, the
civilian sector – in concealed carry, defensive shooting, street survival and home & vehicle
defense. McLennan worked as a staff instructor and consultant at the renowned Thunder Ranch
Texas, Inc. from 1993 until it closed down in 2004. He has also worked as an instructor for John
Farman’s Defense Training International and First Choice Armor.
McLennan holds certificates in firearms tactics-training as well as instructor’s certificates from:
the San Antonio PD, the National Rifle Association, U.S. Army Marksmanship Training Unit, FBI,
Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glock Inc., Off-Shoots Training Institute,
Defense Training International, Texas A&M University Criminal Justice Academy, Thunder
Ranch Texas, Calibre Press, ASP Batons, Monadnock Batons, Ripp Cuff, Fitness Institute For
Police, Fire and Rescue, the Police Marksman Association, the Institute of Advance

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS
I have been an avid owner and shooter of firearms since childhood. I shoot competitively in most
firearm disciplines. I strive to keep current on new products, designs and training methods to
increase my knowledge to ensure my students receive the best training possible. I actively
support our Second Amendment right to own and carry firearms by speaking as frequently as
possible on this subject.
I am the past Vice Chairman of the Arizona POST Firearms Subject Matter Expert Committee
and continue to instruct Advanced Firearms Training and various Firearms Instructor Courses for
POST. I have been a firearms instructor for ALEOAC and POST since 1981.
I continue to train academy recruits in Basic Firearms and conduct advanced and remedial
firearms training courses to police and military officers. I developed the SPD Semi-automatic
Pistol Program, the Glock Transition Program, Shotgun Training Program, Patrol Rifle Program
and SWAT Team Firearms Training Programs for the Scottsdale Police Department beginning in
1981.
